This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian and Jonathan dig deeper into 12 Monkeys from 1995 and directed by Terry Gilliam.
This week, we’re very pleased to by joined by Wayne Henderson (@TIWWH), Terry Gilliam fan, voice artist and host of great podcasts such as The Resurrection Revealed Pocast, The Packers Fan Podcast, and Revenge on the TV Talk Network.
This is a film that wasn’t necessarily designed to give you a warm fuzzy feeling at the end, nor was it intended to give you all the answers. 12 Monkeys demands that you think and pay attention, and requires that you come up with some of your own answers. If you watch it with an open mind, you’ll be rewarded with one of the best time travel stories to date. The casting of Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt proved to be genius strokes. Pitt delivered an edgy and chaotic performance that proved he was more than just a pretty face. Deviating from his Die Hard persona, Willis portrayed a character that was in constant struggle with himself, his mind and his sense of reality. Terry Gilliam’s style is punctuated through the movie with interesting set design, scoring and a style that only Terry Gilliam has.
If you want warm fuzzies, answers and a sense of completion, 12 Monkeys won’t give you that. You might need to watch it a few times to put it all together.
12 Monkeys isn’t your typical Hollywood film because Terry Gilliam isn’t your typical Hollywood Director. Watch the film at least once and be prepared to have questions unanswered. It’s a story that’ll have you thinking about the next day, which is what great movies do.
