Sci Fi Movie Podcast Captain America The First Avenger

Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Ian Fults and Jonathan Colbon

Sci Fi Movie Podcast Captain America The First AvengerThis week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian and Jonathan dig deeper into DonCaptain America: The First Avenger from 2011 and directed by Joe Johnston.

It’s especially appropriate that we’re reviewing the first Cap movie since the sequel, ‘The Winter Soldier‘ opens this weekend.  Both Jonathan and Ian are big Cap fans, while Rem only saw the movie and hasn’t read the comics.  They call it the best of the pre Avengers Phase 1 series. Have a listen to the show and tell us what you think.

The Positive
Captain America: The First Avenger is the last of the Marvel Phase 1 movies to come before The Avengers. It’s a fun and entertaining movie to watch that should keep the entire family engaged.  That the story is focused on World War 2 and many of the elements (Nazi interest in the Occult) are based in reality lends to the feeling of reality in the movie.  We can certainly understand how both sides of the conflict would be working to create their own advantage in war. In this case, both the United States and Germany were working to create a super soldier that would give them an advantage. Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell are both very believable in their roles, and the guy not getting the girl at the end seemed both tragic and believable.  Strong performances were delivered by Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Chester Phillips and Hugo Weaving as both Johann Schmidt and the very evil Red Skull.

The Negative
Ian have very little negative to say about the movie, while Jonathan found a few things that didn’t quite fit.  Rem found the Red Skull character a bit done and unimaginative and not having read the comics, didn’t really clear idea of what the Red Skull was trying to do.

For long time fans of Captain America, this film appears to be the best film adaptation of the comic we’ve seen to date.  If you’re a fan of the comic and somehow haven’t seen it, you’ll be in for a treat.  For non-comic readers, it’s a fun ride that helps set up Cap’s character so you’ll understand him better when you watch The Avengers.

It’s War!  Battles rage across Europe and back home the scrawny Steve Rogers has once again been rejected for service, but this time he has come to the attention of Dr. Erskine and the Strategic Science Reserve.  Transformed into the Super Soldier Captain America, Rogers fights the Red Skull Johann Schmitt and the forces of Hydra for the fate of not only America, but the world!
