It was unanimous that CE3K is absolutely crucial Sci-Fi watching. At the same time, it’s a big scale story about our first contact with Extraterrestrials, and also an intimate story about how individual lives are impacted by first contact with an Alien Intelligence. It’s accessible by the entire family and will be great food for conversation after watching. It’s fascinating to watch our main characters slowly uncover the mystery that builds to climax at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.
It was tough finding things significantly wrong with CE3K, we did find some of the sequences tended to go a bit too long and the ending seemed a bit anti-climactic. We keep in mind, though, that in this day and age, we tend to be a bit ‘attention deficit’. Ian found it hard to believe that all the people in the story eventually end up in the same place, and Jonathan found it somewhat unbelievable that our main character would abandon his family to board the Alien ship.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a realistic and plausible example of how Humanity’s first encounter with Extraterrestrial Life. It’s a bit slow compared to the pace of today’s movies, but if you’re patient, you’ll find Close Encounters to be a treat that’s worth the wait.
