Forbidden Planet PosterThis time on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, we’re digging deeper into “Forbidden Planet“, a Sci-Fi classic from 1953 and an undisputed forerunner of the entire movie genre.

The Positive
It’s always a pleasure to find a smart and interesting Sci-Fi story, even better when that story comes from a movie that’s over 60 years old! And, in the current age of hyper realistic special effects, Forbidden Planet still holds its own. We also see how Forbidden Planet was a story that would inspire countless Sci-Fi movies that would come, and we also see where Star Trek drew much of its inspiration. It’s a smart story with hints of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ told with a Sci-Fi angle.

The Negative
The only real negative that we noticed was the weird dialogue and behavior of the men around Altaira, the movies lone female actor. We get a sense of the attitude towards women in the 50’s, and it’s a somewhat uncomfortable reminder. Sure, we can see the flaws in the special effects, but that’s completely forgivable.

The Verdict
It’s not often we all agree, but we all concur that Forbidden Planet is absolutely essential Sci-Fi watching.  Watch it an see how many of your favorite movies were inspired by it.
