This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Ian, Jonathan welcome Kyran Mountain from The Audio Production Show to discuss “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” from 2005 and directed by Garth Jennings.
Kyran thought that Martin Freeman was perfectly cast as our hero Arthur Dent. Ian is a big fan of the books and especially the original BBC radio plays, and considers this to be more a Sci-Fi spoof that genuine Sci-Fi. Johnathan really enjoyed the irreverent comedic humor that came from the original book series
Kyran found parts of the movie could have been removed, not adding to the thrust of the story. Ian also disliked parts in the movie that weren’t present in the books, and hypothesized that since Douglas Adams passed away during the production, perhaps nobody dared to change what Adams wrote, and the film would have benefited by some changes to the script. Jonathan found Zooey Deschanel’s performance was weak, and Kyran thought it was more a poor script than a poor performance.
If you’re brand new to the Hitchhiker’s Guide, you can watch this movie and enjoy it. It would be valuable to then read the books and listen to the BBC Radio Play. However, if you know the books and the radio play, you might find this movie disappointing.
