Sci-Fi Movie Podcast - Hunger Games - Catching Fire PosterThis time on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, we’re digging deeper into “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” from 2013, directed by Francis Lawrence.

The Positive
Catching Fire” is the second in a four movie adaptation of the popular Suzanne Collins novel. As we mentioned in our sequels special, this movie carries on the storyline of “The Hunger Games” and moves the story forward in a positive way.  Have a budget twice the size of the original gave the opportunity to really expand the world of Panem and the story of Katness.  Both Ian and Pi’ilani found the movies so far to be a good representation of the novels. Rem enjoyed the expansion of the the Panem political world, and the evolution of Effie’s character.

The Negative
It seemed like “Catching Fire” was something of a rehash of the first movie.  PI’ilani thought the other tributes weren’t developed enough as characters and found that the film just went on too long.  Rem thought the whole Quarter Quell competition was obligatory and was really only included because a competition was going to be expected by the viewing audience. Jonathan found the film tended to run long and could have used some sharper editing.

The Verdict
Catching Fire” is a good continuation of “The Hunger Games” series and entertaining to watch. The third installment is being split into two movies.  Do you need to watch it now? You could certainly wait until all the movies are released and do a weekend marathon.
