Sci-Fi Movie Podcast - Invasion of the Body Snatchers PosterThis week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Ian, Rem and Jonathan discuss “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” from 1956 and directed by Don Siegel.

The Positive
A great timeless story that explores one of the base human fears about losing freedom and individuality. This story plays as a quiet Alien invasion movie, and in that vein, succeeds beautifully.  We can also use Body Snatchers as a lens to explore our McCarthyism and the Red Scare of the 50’s.

The Negative
Being that it’s a movie from the 50’s, we believe that many young folks today might not give this film a chance.  Rem thought it the duplication and the death of the original person was a glossed over and not explained very well. Jonathan preferred the original ending, which ended on a much more pessimistic note.

The Verdict
We all agree that Invasion of the Body Snatchers is absolutely essential Sci-Fi viewing. Using an Alien invasion to tell a story about the loss of freedom and individuality, and can also be viewed through the lens of the Communist threat of the 50’s. Once you’re done with this one, go watch the 1978 version with Donald Sutherland.
