This time on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, we’re digging deeper into a film that really changed the way we look at Special Effects, and that’s “Jurassic Park” from 1993. We’re very pleased to welcome Voice Artist Christina Smith to help us dig into the big screen version of the Michael Crichton novel.
The really big draw here are the Dinosaurs, pure and simple. Jurassic Park brought visual effects to a new place with computer animation and state of the art amimatronics. This film makes the Dinosaurs completely believable and the science behind creating the Dinosaurs seems believable to the average view. Younger viewers will identify with the kids in the film. Another bonus for Christina, Jonathan and Rem: Jeff Goldblum!
Ian and Rem talked about The stereotypical portrayal of fat people. Not to slight the great acting of Wayne Knight, but it seemed like his character was given a flat and hollow stereotype. The kids were irritating and the human storyline plays as tedious if your an older viewer. Not entirely intended for younger kids, probably best suited for kids over 10 years old. We also noticed that the film was riddles with holes and trope. Jonathan and Rem have a list of each. Ian points out the old tactic of having characters do stupid things to generate tension, but it’s really more an insult to the intelligence of the viewer.
Jurassic Park certainly deserves at least one viewing, and you’ll be amazed how well the creature effects stand up. You’ll fin a direct relationship between your age and your annoyance level of the humans. When you’re younger the characters behavior seems acceptable. The older you get, the dumber they seem. Or, is that just me?
