If you’ve ever felt the desire to make your own movie, you’ll get some great motivation from “Monsters” which really shows what you can do with Pro-sumer devices and store bought software. It’s an innovated approach to Guerrilla film making. The story is interesting and proposes a world where Alien life has become ‘matter of fact’ and considered a pest species in Mexico. It also has a similar feel to “District 9“.
It looks as though “Monsters” may overtake “The Fifth Element” as Ian’s most hated movie. We all found that the characters were not likeable, and it was hard to get invested in their story. Speaking of, the story played like so many cliches we’ve seen in poorly made moves. The key trope is ‘Stupid people doing stupid things’. Jonathan would like to have seem more of the creatureskely that Humanity would devolve to the point of existing in hover chairs.
Monsters is a great example of low budget Guerrilla film making, but the story is weak and implausible, and it’s difficult to feel for or like the characters, especially when they keep doing stupid things. Is it worth watching? Yeah, once.
