Sci Fi Movie Podcast Paul

Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Judy Marston, Ian Fults and Jonathan Colbon

Sci Fi Movie Podcast PaulThis week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Jonathan and Ian are joined by special guest Judy to review “Paul” from 2011.

Coming off the success of previous hits like ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Shawn Of The Dead’, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s return with a fun story about two UFO enthusiasts who have their own ‘close encounter’.

The Positive:
‘Paul’ tells the story of two Sci-Fi fans (Graeme and Clive) who go to Comic-Con, and then rent an RV to embark on a road trip to the most famous UFO hotspots in America. Through the story, we see and hear ‘homage’ references to most of the great Sci-Fi movies of our time. Though the story is a bit thin, the fast pace and constant Sci-Fi ‘Easer Eggs’ make for a fun distraction.  Ian called it a ‘Love letter to Science Fiction’, a perfect way to describe it.

The Negative:
Very little story line here, some of the characterization is cliche, and it’s hard to really care about Paul’s plight. Ian and Rem thought Seth Rogan was the wrong choice for the size and appearance of Paul, but Jonathan and Judy thought he was good.

Fun movie, watch for all the Sci-Fi Movie references.  A few interesting characters, and Plenty of adult language.

We also talk about Geek stereotypes, and discuss whether being called a Geek is still an insult or if it has now become a compliment. Ian and Jonathan observed that the popular media still has a negative slant on Geeks and ‘Paul’ seemed to perpetuated the same stereotype in a few instances.

You’ll learn about the sound effect you’ve heard dozens of times perhaps without realizing it. It’s called ‘The Wilhelm Scream‘ and it’s been featured in over 225 movies!
