Going back to watch the original ‘Apes’ was a treat! This is a quintessential Sci-Fi Classic that we consider required viewing for any Sci-Fi Fan. The key here is a strong story line about humanity and how we treat each others and members of other species. Ian calls this one ‘Theologically Diverse’ in the story telling, and it really helps us to, as we like to say, hold up the mirror of society so we can look back and learn about ourselves. Planet of the Apes still has one of the best movie endings ever done ‘Apes’ will be great food for discussion between Science and Religion. We leave the ultimate conclusions up to you.
See no evil?
Both Ian and Jonathan thought the makeup effects didn’t hold up over time, and Jonathan thought the prosthetics tended to dampen the ability of the characters to fully express character and emotion. Rem disagreed, and thought they still looked good, but was critical of some of the music and sound editing, especially that weird maniacal laughter from Charlton Heston. Jonathan found it odd that our hero was actually smoking a cigar on a spaceship. But really, we’re mostly nitpicking.
“Planet of the Apes” is absolutely necessary viewing for any Sci-Fi Fan. You can skip the other ‘Apes’ movies and jump straight to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes“. We even created a Machete order to tell you more about what films to watch and in what order.
Oh, and don’t smoke…it’s bad for you.
