This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Jonathan and Ian review “Predator” from 1987 and directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Most of us were really expecting just another Arnie film, and we were pleasantly surprised to discover it was a Sci-Fi movie! A good piece of Sci-Fi and introduction to one our favorite dreadlock characters: The Predator.
Right out of the gates we see strong (pardon the pun) casting from Carl Weathers, Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura, Bill Duke and of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger. When we see the introduction of the Predator (Played by Kevin Peter Hall), we know we’re seeing something new, and as the story progresses, we see some very interesting characterization in the Predator. We learn that the Predator is not only a powerful and ruthless hunter, but it also possess a type of code or honor, something we don’t typically see in an Alien film. The Predator seems only to hunt adversaries that pose a threat or challenge, and will not kill women or those that are unarmed. This is some very welcome character development.
Aside from a few dated special effects, “Predator” stands up remarkably well to the test of time and is still view-able and enjoyable even several decades after its initial release.
This film introduced a fascinating Sci-Fi character and was the start point for future Predator movies, books and Comics. If you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommenced “Predator“. It’s a fun action movie and has a great Sci-Fi angle that’ll have you wanting more!
