This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Ian, Jonathan dig deeper into “Star Trek Into Darkness” from 2013 and directed by J.J. Abrams. IF you haven’t seen the first reboot from 2009, go watch it and then listen to our Star Trek Podcast episode.
The next episode of J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot picks up a year after the first, and reunites us with a stellar cast and a very fine effort by Benedict Cumberbatch. Jon really appreciated that we encounter the Klingon race, and the call outs to the original series. Ian and Rem really like the casting in this new Trek series. The addition of Peter Weller as Admiral Marcus was particular satisfying.
We concluded that the big mistake was attempting to make this a remake of the original “Wrath of Khan” from 1982. There was a great opportunity to introduce a new foe instead of trying to retread the Khan character. Sure, Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor and did his best under the circumstances, but he was hamstrung by a poor story line and under developed script. Also, did we need to see Spock again? It seemed like a cheap attempt to cash in on Leonard Nimoy. Seeing Alice Eve in here underwear seemed cheap, and Trek fans didn’t appreciate it. Rem didn’t buy Kirk’s death, and considered yet another cheap ploy to build emotion.
This can be considered essential viewing if you’re a Star Trek fan, and continues the 2009 reboot very well. This new version of Star Trek is more based on action than the original cast movies, and much of the intellectual content from the original series seems to get lost here. Long time Trek fans will find this movie a bit disappointing. On the flip side, if J.J. Trek is your introduction to the series, go back to the original TV series and you’ll discover the a great TV series with considerably more intellectual stimulation.
A big Thanks to Elizabeth for sending us this, HBO making a series based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series
