Loosely (and we mean loosely!) based on the Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers follows the story of a young Johnny Rico and his journey through the Mobile Infantry as humanity battles an insect species called ‘Arachnids’ or ‘Bugs’.
How much you enjoy or dislike Starship Troopers will depend on your familiarity with the novel by Robert Heinlein. Both Ian and Jonathan read the novel, Ian hated the movie and Jonathan enjoyed it. Rem, having not read the novel probably enjoyed it the most, not only for the all out shoot ’em up Bug fun, but for the satirical news reports which is similar to what Verhoeven did with commercials in the original RoboCop. There was also an interesting undercurrent of Fascism that ran through the movie that was at time funny and at other times a bit disturbing. Knowing that Paul Verhoeven didn’t even finish reading the novel when making the movie, it’s possible to be a bit more forgiving with the films departure from the novel.
If you exclude Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown, you can then say that the acting was one of the biggest drawbacks to Starship Troopers. The very name became somewhat tainted by the very awful sequels that followed. Many of the ideas were implausible, such as the ability for the Arachnids to fire a spore into space, then cause that spore to hit an asteroid and send it on a collision course with Earth from across the galaxy is ridiculous.
If you’re expecting the movie adaptation of Starship Troopers to in any way resemble the original novel by Robert Heinlein, then move on, you’re not going to get it. But, if you like your Sci-Fi with some decent visuals, campy humor and an bit of exploration on how our our political structures could change in the future, the Starship Troopers might entertain you.
