Hosted by Remi Lavictoire, Cris Nicholls, Jonathan Colbon and Ian Fults
This week on The Sci-Fi Movie Podcast, Rem, Jonathan and Ian are joined by Author Cris Nicholls who has just released his new novel “Talon: Rising“. The guys were pretty hard pressed to find anything wrong with this film, but we did manage to entertain Cris’ alternate theory that Kyle Reese was actually a villain in the movie. How so? Have a listen let us know what you think!
The Terminator at first comes off like your basic futurist action movie. What viewers notice when the credits roll is a thought that ‘Hey, this was better than I expected!’, and The Terminator is certainly more than you average action movie. The storyline about technology turning against us isn’t new (see 2001), but tell a ‘bad tech’ story in a surprisingly tight and well written script. The Character development is strong and there’s a relentless pace that runs through the story. We get some good characterization from Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn in the roles of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese. This the first role for Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Villain in the movie, and his performance has become iconic in the Sci-Fi realm.
By today’s standards, some of the visual effects look a bit dated, and the movie has a distinct 80’s feel (that only seems to bother Rem, but Cris, Jonathan and Ian enjoyed it), but that can be forgiven given the overall quality of the movie.
If you somehow missed The Terminator or any of the sequels, then watch it tonight. Then watch Terminator 2, and you’ll want to keep going from there. The Terminator is necessary viewing for any Sci-Fi fan.
Thanks very much to Cris Nicholls for joing us on the show. You can find his paperback novel “Talon: Rising” at Amazon.com
Here’s the story description:
Hayden Lake is as surprised as anyone when he gets hand picked by his hero to become the next star of the hottest show “Freedom Force’. He could never have predicted that he would grow up to become the breakout superstar everyone knows as Talon. His unparalleled career smashes every record and ultimately ends in the most shocking four minutes the world has ever seen. Soon everyone on the planet would know the name, Talon. He would be loved or hated; nothing in between. Whether he is remembered as a ‘criminal’ or a ‘hero’ will be irrelevant. He will have changed the course of history, forever. —- Talon Rising chronicles New Earth in the near future where soldiers are only as good as their last high score and war is just another channel in a good cable package.
